Monthly Shoot, October 29, 2011
Today was another great day to shoot.  We had cool weather but clear skies.
We had 12 shooters who come out to enjoy the shoot.  Everyone had a good time with lots of good natured fun.  All the scores are posted on the 2011 Scores page.
We had shooters of all ages.
Lightning Striker, you did a great job.
Uncle Sam came by to say hi but couldn't shoot with us today as his family is dealing with some health problems.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Hillbilly Bob recently had surgery and is reported to be doing well.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Thanks to Barb for keeping score and making sure things kept moving.
After the shoot we built a big campfire and served a pot of Ozark Annie's world famous taco chili.  Thanks for taking the time to prepare it.  Thanks also to the other folks who brought side dishes.  Everything was delicious.  Everyone seemed to get enough to eat.  We had a great time sitting around the fire.
Choupique discussed some proposed category and rule changes and solicited feedback on how he should vote to represent the club at the TG conference.
We decided to start the next several shoots at 12 noon since the weather is getting cooler.
Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed a great day of shooting.  Our next shoot will be on November 12th, at 12 noon.  Hope to see you then.

Monthly Shoot, September 10, 2011
Today was a great day to shoot.  We had a few early sprinkles but they soon stopped and we started shooting.  The temperature was perfect.
We had nine shooters and two visitors who come out to enjoy the shoot.  Everyone had a good time with lots of good natured fun.  All the scores are posted on the 2011 Scores page.
Ozark Shootist rearranged some of the targets to keep the stages fresh and challenging.  He put one target partially behind a small tree.  Guess who hit the tree instead of the target?
Uncle Sam couldn't shoot with us today as his family is dealing with some health problems.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thanks to Barb for keeping score and making sure things kept moving.
We made a change to the schedule in October. Because some of our members will be traveling to other shoots and some will be deer hunting on the second Saturday we moved the regular monthly shoot from the 8th to the 29th.  That is the 5th Saturday but this will be a regular Cowboy shoot and NOT a 5th Saturday practice shoot.
Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed a great day of shooting.

Hawaiian Shoot, August 13, 2011
Today was warm and humid but a good day for shooting.
We had eight shooters who come out to enjoy the Hawaiian shoot.  Everyone had a good time. Plenty of pictures are posted on the Pictures page.
Ozark Captain started the match off on the wrong foot when he missed the holster after shooting his second pistol and dropped it.  Since it was not loaded it was an automatic stage DQ.  That gave rise to a lot of good natured ribbing for the rest of the match.
Uncle Sam stopped by to provide moral support and say hi.  Hillbilly Bob (and his dad) stopped by and stayed a while to visit.  He says he feels good and he certainly looks good.  We wish him continued good progress and ask everyone to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Thanks to Barb for keeping score and making sure things kept moving.
Everyone who attended this Hawaiian Shoot had a good time.  We urge everyone to join us next month for the regular Cowboy Shoot on September 10th.

Fun Shoot, July 30, 2011
Today was sunny, hot and humid.
We had seven shooters come out to enjoy the 5th Saturday Fun Shoot and it lived up to it's name.
Five of us shot a total of 4 regular Cowboy stages.  Since we didn't keep score everyone shot clean and with blazing fast speed. (lol)  We did have a chance to practice technique and that was great.  Ozark Shootist and Dun Vagen teamed up to shoot some Wild Bunch stages and they had a ball.  They also practiced on some clay birds.  When we were done with the regular stages we joined them on the clay birds.  Ozark Annie broke her first clay bird target and she was really pleased.  In fact, she hit a bunch of them.  We all shot some flip over targets and had a good time.  We finished up around noon so we beat most of the heat.
Uncle Sam stopped by to provide moral support and say hi.  He reported that Hillbilly Bob is doing well and his last blood tests were normal.  We wish him continued good progress and ask everyone to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Everyone who attended this 5th Saturday Fun Shoot had a good time.  We urge everyone to join us next month for the regular Cowboy Shoot on August 13th.

Cowboy Shoot, July 9, 2011
Today was sunny, hot and humid.
We had a small turnout with only 6 shooters.  That didn't keep us from having a great time.  We enjoyed great camaraderie and a few laughs.
Hillbilly Bob stopped by to watch and join in the banter.  We were glad to see him and  hope he continues to feel OK.  We hope he comes back often as he undergoes his treatments.
We were also glad Buckshot Baby is back to normal and shooting again after some surgery.
We also had a visitor.  Robby Beavers stopped by for his first taste of Cowboy Action Shooting.  He shot a stage with us and enjoyed it.  We hope he comes back often.

Annual Match, June 10-11, 2011
Please see the 2011 Annual Match page for all the pictures.
We had 17 shooters plus guests and everyone had a great time.
Scouts from Troop 160 raised the flag on our new flag pole. The flag was dedicated to the memory of Ryan Martin.
We had a chili cook-off Friday evening with four entries.  Everyone enjoyed it and got plenty to eat.  Sgt. Gump brought his authentic cowboy chuck wagon and provided lunch and supper on Saturday.  It was delicious and we thank him and his helpers.
The Boy Scouts and Lightning Striker (Logan Scott) picked up brass during the match and we appreciated their help.
Kermin Kid was recognized for his contribution in helping to make the new Saloon stage a reality.  We also thank the other members who donated materials, time and energy to build the  stage.  It is great addition to our range.
We thank all the members, especially Uncle Sam, for the many hours they put in to make the annual match a success.  The range really looked great, complete with new interactive targets.  Thanks to the members who brought canopies for shade and tables and chairs.
A very special thanks to some of our guests who brought canopies, umbrellas, generators and fans to help keep everyone cool.  You really demonstrate "The Cowboy Way".
And a very special thanks to Barb (Quick Trigger's better half) for her excellent score keeping.  She keeps score at every Waddies match they attend and her help in keeping things moving is greatly appreciated.
And last but certainly not least, The West Plains Waddies want to thank all those cowboys and cowgirls who came out and shot.  We truly appreciate your attendance and we hope you come back next year.

Cowboy Shoot, Saturday, May 14, 2011
It was a gray, cold and windy day on Shadow Ridge but we had 7 shooters show up.  Despite the weather they enjoyed a good shoot.

Following the shoot, the members worked on the range in preperation for the annual shoot.  Grass was cut and a general clean-up performed.  It is looking good.  We thank all that stayed to help.

Kerman Kid donated additional lumber for use on the range.  We really appreciate it and it will be put to good use.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - Newspaper Article
A reporter from the Ozark County Times was present at the March 12th shoot to do an article on our club and the Ozark County residents that took part.  Here is the article.  We thank the Ozark County Times for telling readers about our club and our sport.

Area residents reenact Old West days in
cowboy action shooting club events
Area residents who appreciate history and enjoy practicing "the cowboy way" gathered Saturday on a hillside east of Twin Bridges to recreate a few hours from the Old West era and demonstrate their marksmanship with 19th-century firearms.

Ozark County residents Ted and Katie Hoversen of Dawt and Vince and Ann Drexelius of the Bakersfield area are members of the West Plains Waddies, a chapter of the Single-Action Shooting Society that hosts "cowboy action shooting" gatherings around the US and throughout the world.

The Waddies meet at their shooting range on the second and fifth Saturdays of each month to participate in timed target-shooting competitions using firearms replicating those from the 1800s. Many are .38 or .45 caliber pistols and rifles or 20- or 12-gauge shotguns.

Members, both men and women, arrive dressed in Old West costumes with six-shooters tucked into in tooled-leather holsters worn around their waists.

They all have cowboy aliases. Among club members, the Hoversens and Drexeliuses are better known as Major Missalot, Buckshot Baby, Ozark Captain and Ozark Annie.

Ted Hoversen, left, of Dawt, known by his SASS alias Major Missalot, converted a kitchen chair into a gun cart to transport the guns and equipment he and his wife, Katie (Buckshot Baby) use at the cowboy action shooting events. Shown with the Hoversens are fellow West Plains Waddies members Ann (Ozark Annie) and Vince (Ozark Captain) Drexelius of the Bakersfield area.

The West Plains group took its name, Waddies, after the term used to describe an Old West cowboy who "wandered from cow camp to cow camp," Katie Hoversen said.

Many members participate in shooting events hosted by other clubs nationwide and around the world. Katie Hoversen said when she and husband Ted retired, they became full-time RVers and often participated in shoots wherever their travels took them, finding schedules in the association's newsletter. They converted one of their kitchen chairs into a gun cart, decorated with tanned cow hide, to transport their equipment and ammo.

The Single-Action Shooting Society commemorates the "era of the Old West cowboy," said Vince Drexelius, a retired professional relationship representative for Blue Cross-Blue Shield. "It's as much about the friendship and the cowboy way-treating people politely and helping others-as it is about shooting the old guns."

As an example he described how one West Plains Waddies member gave the Drexeliuses' grandson Nathan Scott, 11, two .38 caliber pistols and a shotgun to use at the club's shooting events. "It's a given that Nathan is to pass them along to someone else when the time comes," Vince said. "That's the cowboy way."

Nathan is the son of Amy and Mike Scott of Bakersfield. Everyone in the family shoots.

Youngsters in the club are called buckaroos, and they shoot .22 rifles and pistols, if they prefer.

Safety procedures are strictly followed at the shooting competitions. Contestants load their weapons shortly before their turn to shoot, and always in front of a "loading officer" who makes sure no safety steps are overlooked. Once the guns are loaded - with no more than five bullets in each six-shooter so that the hammer rests on an empty chamber - the contestant places them on the next table and cannot touch them again until he or she is actively shooting.

The club welcomes newcomers. "We love having new people come," said Katie Hoversen. "The way it works is, the first time you come, you can use our guns and ammo to shoot one stage of the competition. After that, you're expected to have your own guns and ammo."

For more information about visiting or joining SASS, contact the Hoversens at 284-1432; katiehoversen@gmail.com. Or visit the club's website, www.wpwaddies.com.

From left are Ozark Captain (Vince Drexelius), Moonshine Dan (Dan Royster), Choupique (Robert Boudreau), Loaded Tater (Tatum McMillian), Ozark Annie (Ann Drexelius), Dun Vagen (Jim McLeod), Quick Trigger (Tom Wilds), Lost Camp (Cyrus Carter), Shady Lady (JoAnn Carter), Ozark Shootist (Chris Cutler), Buckshot Baby (Katie Hoversen), Cheyenne (Jerry Lucas), Major Missalot (Ted Hoversen) and club president Uncle Sam (Fred Howell).

Cowboy Shoot - March 12, 2011
We had a great shoot on a beautiful spring day.  The temperature hit 70 under clear skies.

We had a total of 13 shooters plus several non-shooters.  We shot 6 stages and everyone had a great time and learned a lot.  Thanks Barb, for keeping score.

We welcomed Moon Shine Dan and were glad he shot with us.  We also welcomed back Cheyenne, a member who has not shot for a while.

Choupique will conduct an ROII class on April 30th, starting at 8 AM,  The class will take about 4 hours and will cost $25.  We urge all our members who have completed an ROI class to take advantage of this opportunity to upgrade their status to ROII.

Check the Schedule page for the dates of upcoming work days.  We have a lot to do in preparation for our Annual shoot on June 10th & 11th.   We need the help and cooperation of all members to make this a success.

Work Day - February 19, 2011
A special work day was scheduled to install the floor for a new stage.  Kerman Kid donated the treated lumber for the floor of a new Saloon stage.  We removed the old Hangman's Noose and installed the floor in it's place.  The walls and roof will be installed later.

Quick Trigger did a lot of trimming around the range and it looks great.  Major Missalot installed a new bonus target on the Mine Car.  It should present quite a challange at the next match.

We had the help of both members and non-members and appreciate the efforts of everyone who showed up.

Fun - Practice Shoot Saturday, January 29, 2011
We had 8 shooters and they enjoyed a truly beautiful day.  The temperature was a little over 60 with lots of sunshine.

We are happy to welcome Tatum McMillian, Rob Pilkington and Mike.  We hope they come back soon and join our membership.

Our "Fun - Practice - Long Range" shoot was a huge success.  We shot some stages, some of the guys shot long range rifle, we shot more stages, we shot clay birds (Dun Vagen couldn't miss) we shot more stages and we even had a team competition to shoot a 2x4 in half then we shot more stages.  Everyone had a great time.

Uncle Sam made arrangements for Mike to bring in burgers for lunch.  They were delicious.  Thanks Uncle Sam.

Saturday, January 8, 2011
The shoot was cancelled due to cold and windy weather.
Instead of shooting, we gathered at Roy's Store and Restaurant in Dora
for food, fun, fellowship and a business meeting.  We had a good crowd and got a lot accomplished, mostly in preparation for the Annual Match in June.  Please see the 2011 Annual Match page for all the information.

Group 3 Group 4

The highlight of the meeting was when Choupique called "Snake Eyes Scott" (Nathan Scott) to come forward.  Choupique explained that he felt young folks like Nathan were the future of our sport and he wanted to make an investment in that future.  He presented Nathan with a double barrel shotgun and two 357 caliber Ruger Blackhawks.  Nathan was more than surprised.  Thank you Choupique.
Nathan and His Guns     Nathan and Choupique

We also discussed the need to upgrade and replace some of our targets and build some additional store fronts.  Different folks are checking on the availability of wood and steel.  Work dates are also planned for April 30th, May 7th and May 14th to get ready for the Annual Match.  Mark your calendars.
